His family moved to Seattle when Quincy was just 10. At school, a musical interest was developed by the young Quincy in early stages, trying out a variety of devices in the school band. He then settled to trumpet; learning how exactly to perform and practicing all night, he then met a pianist called Ray Charles and started a couple with him. In the 1950's, Jones was appointed as trumpeter and musical director of the Dizzy Gillespie Band and delivered from the visit to record his very own material with ABC - Paramount Records.
