His family moved to Seattle when Quincy was just 10. At school, a musical interest was developed by the young Quincy in early stages, trying out a variety of devices in the school band. He then settled to trumpet; learning how exactly to perform and practicing all night, he then met a pianist called Ray Charles and started a couple with him. The two gifted young musicians easily landed some gigs in the city's small groups, at weddings and other occasions. Quincy Jones then left Seattle to call home in Boston and attend the Berklee College of Music.Once in Boston, Jones dropped out of Berklee to trip under Lionel Hampton's baton. Next tour, Jones directed himself to New York, where he became an extremely sought-after arranger; jazz royalties Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Sarah Vaughan and Ray Charles all employed Jones for his organizing services. In the 1950's, Jones was appointed as trumpeter and musical director of the Dizzy Gillespie Band and delivered from the visit to record his very own material with ABC - Paramount Records. It was in 1957 that Quincy Jones studied composition with no apart from Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen; he also had the opportunity to conduct at the Paris Olympia and was named music director of Barclay Disques, a distributor for Mercury Records.It was after all of these effective efforts that Quincy Jones moved on to the entire world of production.
